The difference
- Snapshot — Fast point-in-time disk image. Ideal before updates or config changes.
- Backup — Scheduled automated storage outside the host system. Protects against hardware failure and data loss.
Best practices
- Enable at least 1 automated backup per day (7-day retention recommended)
- Always take a snapshot before OS upgrades or package updates
- Replicate critical data via rsync/borg to external storage (3-2-1 rule)
- Test restores regularly!
