The difference

  • Snapshot — Fast point-in-time disk image. Ideal before updates or config changes.
  • Backup — Scheduled automated storage outside the host system. Protects against hardware failure and data loss.

Best practices

  1. Enable at least 1 automated backup per day (7-day retention recommended)
  2. Always take a snapshot before OS upgrades or package updates
  3. Replicate critical data via rsync/borg to external storage (3-2-1 rule)
  4. Test restores regularly!
